Using the library
You can read without creating an account. Whether or not you sign in, the site stores a random identifier in your browser and records which stories are opened, reading times, words looked up, answers to the question comparing story difficulty, and audio listening time. These anonymous records are used to improve the reading library, for example to see which words need a Japanese meaning and whether stories are at the right level.
Optional accounts
If you choose Continue with Google, Google provides your email address and a unique account identifier for authentication. Extensive Reader stores the stories you mark as read, completed reading dates, word counts, reading time, lookup counts, the words you look up and the sentences they appear in, audio use, and the paragraph and audio positions you choose to bookmark. You can see the words you have looked up in My words. Progress saved on this device before sign-in may be added to your account when you sign in. This information can then be synchronized across your devices. Your Google password is never provided to Extensive Reader. The same account is shared with the vocabulary flashcard app run by the same teacher, so one Google sign-in works for both.
How data is used
Information is used to provide synchronized reading progress, operate the site, and understand how the library is used. The site owner can view signed-in accounts' email addresses and per-account completed reading activity, including reading days, stories, word counts, the words looked up, and listening time, in a private dashboard. This is not visible to other readers. Information is not sold or used for advertising. Anonymous reading-activity records are not intentionally linked to your Google account.
Service providers
Google provides sign-in, Supabase provides authentication and database services, and Cloudflare hosts the website. These providers process information as needed to provide their services and apply their own privacy and security practices.
Your choices and questions
You may use the library without signing in, or sign out at any time. To ask about your information or request deletion of your account and synchronized progress, email ciaranrawlinson@gmail.com.
